Ireland is a beautiful green country located in northwest Europe. It is an island that is separated from Great Britain by the Irish Sea. The island is considered the 20th largest island in the world, and encompasses 84,421 kilometers squared of land. It is home to 6.4 million people, and the capital city of Dublin has a population of 1.273 million people. The island has a hilly geography with numerous plains and rivers cutting through the land. Ireland is a mystical and wonderful place to live and to visit.

Emerald Isle: Ireland

Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle because it's very green. It's green because it rains a lot. It's warm and wet in the summer and cold and wet in the winter!...Ireland has several nicknames, but perhaps the best known is “the Emerald Isle”. Even Johnny Cash has already referred to Ireland in this way in his song Forty Shades of Green, written on a 1959 tour of his country. The nickname originated in the 18th century, in a poem by Irish writer William Drennan, in which he referred to his country as “the emerald of Europe”.
The culture of Ireland includes language, literature, music, art, folklore, cuisine, and sport associated with Ireland and the Irish people. For most of its recorded history, Irish culture has been primarily Gaelic. It has also been influenced by Anglo-Norman, English and Scottish culture.

The Irish have a rich diet of shrimp, salmon, vegetables, soda bread, cheese, and roasted meat. Some popular dishes include the boxty, the full Irish breakfast, colcannon, Irish ... stew, barmbrack. A boxty is a dish made with seasoned potato cakes that are very much like pancakes. The diet consisted of large quantities of meat, fish, grain-based foods, dairy products, fruit and vegetables. They consumed tea and coffee, wine and spirits.
Although much of their food did not survive the sea journeys, they brought cattle, swine, poultry, and honeybees with them and introduced wheat, barley, rye, and fruit trees.
